LW MEN'S GOLF LEAGUE

E ight golfers from the Leisure World Men’s Golf League visited the par 62 David L. Baker Golf Course in Fountain Valley on March 28. The weather was partly cloudy and cool at the 7 a.m. teeoff . The course was very wet, and recent punching/aerating/ sanding of the greens made putting problematic. But by round’s end the skies had cleared and the course was drying out a bit.

In spite of the conditions, the players shot some exceptional golf, as the course was shortened a bit by placing the tees slightly forward in the tee box and significantly wet greens are very receptive to holding balls that reached the putting surface. Jim Goltra had a rare eagle on the 300-yard par 4 16th by holing his second shot from about 60-yards with a sand wedge.

Winners: Every player scored at least net 4 under par or better. Fujio Norihiro had the best net round at 52, followed by Dave LaCascia and Bob Munn at 54, Ron Jackson at 56, Gary Stivers and Chris Lankford at 57, and Sam Choi and Jim Goltra at 58.

LaCascia was closest to the pin on the 100-yard par 3 third hole, and Norihiro was closest on the 130-yard par 3 12th. Fewest putts went to Norihiro and Munn. There were nine birdies: two each by LaCascia, Choi and Goltra, and one each by Norihiro, Stivers and Lankford.

Eight golfers visited the par 71 Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana on March 31.

It had rained overnight, and the weather was overcast and initially misty at the 7 a.m. tee time. Toward the end of the round some blue sky could be seen, but the course never dried out. Scores were better than usual with three golfers well under net par and the remainder just a few over. Willowick is a very long course with thick rough, so any score near net par is an accomplishment.

Winners: Clay Fischer, 8 under par, first place; Sam Choi, 4 under, second; Fujio Norihiro, 1 under, third; Jae Choi and Gary Stivers, 1 over, fourth; Jim Goltra, Chris Lankford and Bill Zurn, fifth.

Closest to the pin on both the par 3 fourth and 12th holes was Lankford. Norihiro had fewest putts, and there were seven birdies—two by Goltra, and one each by Choi, Fischer, Lankford, Norihiro and Stivers. The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. These courses are always quite full, so advance league reservations are required with a signup sheet available at each round.

There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (two under par) are generously rewarded.

Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.

—Dave LaCascia There is a shotgun scramble planned for April 30. Sign-ups have begun at the clubhouse during men's, women's, and Guys and Gals tournaments. Cost to play is expected to be $15 per player. Only 54 players— men and women—can play (six golfers per team at each hole). Players must have a women's or men's club handicap to enter.
