Guys and Gals Golf Tournament
Shotgun scramble rules are: 1. Each team member tees off and then it's best ball until the ball goes in the hole. 2. Each best shot is to be marked, and every other player plays from within six inches of that spot. 3. Every team member must use their drive off the tee three times. 4. All balls are to be played into the hole— no gimmies or concessions.
5. Only the best score is entered on the scorecard.
A cool but sunny morning greeted players in the Guys and Gals Golf Tournament on March 19. Thirty-two teams of one man and one woman with varying golfing skills teed off at 7:30 a.m. at the par 54 Turtle Lake Golf Course.
There was no wind, and the course was in good playing condition with well-maintained greens, fairways, and tee boxes. The 32 teams competed for best net scores (gross score minus handicap), plus four circle holes (shots within a 5-foot radius rewarded), and two closest to the pin challenges. Every team scored well with 30 of the 32 teams net at or below par, and there were 10 circle hole winners, and 44 birdies recorded.
Closest to the pin for the men was Mark Rice and Bill Zurn, and for the women it was Jane Song and Sang Hi Kim. Low net score for the round was Bob and Janice Tucker at 10 under par, followed by Dave LaCascia and Nancy Smith. Pat Paternoster and Nancy Smith tied for second lowest at nine under. Bill Lyons and Kyung Ju, and the Turners tied for low gross at 3 under 51.
Tournament statistics: Overall average gross score for all 32 teams was 58.1 strokes or slightly over four strokes above par. Average net scores for all teams was 49.7 strokes or just over four strokes under par. Gross scores were slightly better than last month’s tournament due to better weather.
A flight winners (handicaps of 0-8): The Turners, first place: LaCascia and Smith, second; Lyons and Ju, third; Mark Rice and Janice Turner, fourth; Mike Mayfield and Nancy Tye, fifth.
B flight winners (handicaps of 9-11): Paternoster and Smith, first place; Fujio Norihiro and Keiko Sekino, second; Gene Archambault and Stella Yoon, third; Seon and Sang Kim, fourth; Steve Walker and Susie Kim, fifth.
C flight winners (handicaps of 13-18): Mark Tal and Ann Tran first place; John Rudosky and Jane Kors, second; Scott Tuchfarber and Carmen Daely, Bill Zurn and Neva Senske, Joon Sup and Young Sil Yoon, Jae H. and Sun Lee, and Jon Russell and MaryAnn Moore, third.
A shotgun scramble is planned for April 30. Signups will begin in early April at the clubhouse during men’s, women’s, and Guys and Gals tournaments. Cost to play is expected to be $15 per player. Only 54 players—men and women—can play (six golfers per team at each hole.) Players must have a womens or mens club handicap to enter.
The Men’s Golf Club spring picnic is scheduled for May 28. Dinner will be a barbecue. Cost is to be determined and will be announced at a later date.
The next Guys and Gals Tournament will be on April 16, then every third and fifth Wednesday if there is one. The men’s tournament is played every second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Those who had planned to play in any tournament and cannot should contact Scott Tuchfarber at 909-684-0426, or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975 as soon as possible. Arrive 10-15 minutes prior to scheduled tee time and be ready to play.
