Genesis 3:4 says, “Then the serpent said to the woman, “you will not surely die…” Adam and Eve, the “first parents” took a swan dive into the abyss when they decided to listen to the cunning serpent instead of what God had commanded. No curse has fallen on humanity that is worse than the curse of sin, which was the result of Adam and Eve’s costly mistake.
Notice in Genesis 3, the serpent begins with the question, “Has God indeed said…” and quickly moves to the declarative in verse 4, “You will not surely die.” This passage reveals ground zero for the downfall of humanity, when sin entered the world (Romans 5:12).
Eve’s feet should have run at the sound of the first question, “Has God indeed said?” But she stuck around to hear the serpent’s declarative in verse 4. This time, resulting in her hiding from God (Genesis 3:8).
Today, some people will ask “How did we get here as a society?” The answer is that too many people are still listening to the question, “Has God indeed said?” and therefore have developed ears to hear the declarative, “You will not surely die.”
A believer’s only hope is divine intervention. God knew the world would need a redeemer. So he lovingly provided his son Jesus Christ, the second Adam.
Romans 5:15, says “For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.”
