LAPIDARY AND JEWELRY CLUB

The Lapidary and Jewelry Club has a new class in copper enameling that will begin April 2.

Enameling is the process of adding finely ground colored glass to pieces of copper, which are then fired in a kiln to make colorful and lasting pieces of wearable or displayable art.

Students will learn the proper preparation of the metal and will use various application techniques including layering, stenciling, sgraffito, wet packing and more. Students will learn how to use tools and to safely use the kiln to fire the pieces to make them permanent.

Students from past classes have surprised themselves at the attractive and wearable pieces they end up with.

The class is taught by LaVerne Christenson who has more than 20 years of experience in the process. The class is held every Wednesday for six weeks starting April 2, from 1-3 p.m. The cost is $20 and includes all supplies including copper, enamels and tools. Interested students should sign up as soon as possible in the Lapidary Room, located in Clubhouse 4. Classes are limited to four people.
