LAPIDARY AND JEWELRY CLUB

The Lapidary and Jewelry Club will debut a new class in enameling on April 2. Enameling is the process of adding finely ground colored glass to pieces of copper which are then fired in a kiln to make colorful and lasting pieces of wearable or displayable art.

The class will be held every Wednesday for six weeks beginning April 2, from 1-3 p.m. The cost is $20. All supplies including copper, enamels and tools are provided.

Students will learn the proper preparation of the metal and will use various application techniques including layering, stenciling, sgraffito, wet packing and more. Students will learn how to use tools and to safely use the kiln to fire the pieces to make them permanent. Students from past classes have surprised themselves at the attractive and wearable pieces they end up with.

The class is taught by LaVerne Christenson who has more than 20 years of experience in the process. People can sign up for the class in the Lapidary Room, located in Clubhouse 4. Classes are limited to four people.
