First Christian Church
First Christian Church of Leisure World teaches from God’s word, the Holy Bible, most often verse by verse. It is a friendly church that welcomes all visitors to join in worship and explore God’s word together. “That we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine,” Romans 1:12 Pastor’s Message
Genesis 47 talks about major fiscal upheaval in Egypt, brought on by the many years of famine. Genesis 47:13 states: “Now there was no bread in all the land of Egypt and the land of Cannan languished because of the famine.” Joseph gathered all the money that was in the land of Egypt and Canaan to buy grain. Eventually, that money was spent and in verse 15 the Egyptians came to Joseph and said: “Give us food, for why should we die in your presence? For our money is gone.” Joseph advised them to bring their livestock as payment for food. Eventually, all the livestock had all been given away as payment. Verse 20 reads: “Then Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for every man of the Egyptians sold his field. All the land became Pharaoh’s. All the Egyptians had now belonged to Pharaoh.”
Was this unfair of Joseph to take all that they had for Pharaoh’s coffer? Notice he bought the land; he didn’t just take it. They could choose to keep the land and perish, or sell the land and purchase the grain and live.
Even today, the decisions people make are life and death decisions, just as it was then for the Egyptians. Recalling the verse John 3:16 makes the church wonder how many people actually take time to read and understand what Jesus was saying. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” It truly is a life and death decision everyone must make, and Jesus himself said there is no amount of money that can be given for anyone’s life.
Weekend Services
Sunday services are from 9:30-10:45 a.m. and are traditional services with Hymnal music led by Janet Ray with Sherry Parmenter at the piano. Sandy Carlson will sing the special this week.
Saturday services are from 9:30-10:45 a.m. and include contemporary songs of worship, led by Gregory Black with guitar and vocal accompaniment.
Midweek Studies
Melli Herrera leads a Women’s Bible Study on Mondays from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Pastor Humes leads a Thursday Bible Study from 10:30-11:30 a.m. He also leads a Friday Prayer and Bible Study from 4-5 p.m. All Leisure World residents are welcome to attend the above services and Bible studies.
Scripture of the week
“The lord’s mercies indeed never cease, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness,” Lamentations 3:22-23 (NASB).
