Shotgun/Scramble Golf Tournament
Fifty-four golfers from the Leisure World men’s and women’s golf leagues played in a special shotgun/ scramble tournament on Jan. 29 at the Turtle Lake Golf Course. Nine teams of six players teed off—in a shotgun format—with the goal to have the lowest gross score of the day. At tee time the weather was cool and damp with no wind, but very sunny. After a few holes clothing layers were being shed, and the dampness disappeared. By round’s end, it was a beautiful day to play golf.
Special rules for the tournament were: 1. Each team member teed off and then it was best ball until the ball went into the hole. 2. Each best shot was marked, and every other player played from within 6 inches of that spot. 3. Every team member used their drive off the tee three times. 4. All balls were played into the hole—no concessions. 5. Only the best score was entered on the scorecard. The competition was intense but friendly with numerous birdies and excellent support between team members. Considering the nearly ideal playing conditions, it was not surprising that each team achieved a belowpar score. Closest to the pin on the eighth and 17th holes were Terry Thrift and Young Lee for the men, and Grace Choi and Anne Tran for the women. There were no holes-in-one this round but numerous “almost” shots. Additionally, there were 14 circle hole winners.
Winners: Bob Barnum (captain), Jack Haskins, Bill Zurn, Scott Tuchfarber, Ben Benjamins and Stella Yoon, 11 under par 43, first place; Pat Paternoster (captain), John Rudosky, Kevin Linstedt, Jun Um, Kay Hong and Hae Lee, 9 under 45, second; Mike Mayfield (captain), Bruce Bowles, Tom Owens, Kyung Ju, Nancy Tye and Janice Turner, 8 under 46, third.
Special thanks to Steve Moody for setting up the event and being the tournament director; Bob Turner for bringing the donuts; and Steve Walker and Ron Steele for cleaning up after. Appreciation to starter Kyu for announcing the tournament and the maintenance team for their usual great job in getting the course ready for play.
