Those who would like to play a fun and friendly game of Texas Hold ‘Em for a $5 buy-in with the Tournament Poker Club can make plans to play Jan. 18. Regular tournaments are on the first three Saturdays of every month and start with coffee and treats and registration at 10 a.m. Cards are in the air at 10:30. There is no late seating.

At the club’s tournament on Jan. 18, there were about 50 players, which made for a great time for all participants. High hand winners were Lem Hall—spade royal flush—and K.C. Lee— A-5 spade straight flush. Namil Shin won a prize for playing and winning with the promo hand of 9-4.

As the winners of their original table, the final table players were: Namil Shin, first place; Tom Pappas, second; Marvin Rollnick, third; Shelly Yu, fourth; Dennis Kotecki, fifth; Brent Covington, sixth; Barry Brideau, seventh. Play continued at the final table until Shin and Pappas were head’s up. In the final hand of the match, Pappas was holding K-Q and Shin had A-2. Pappas went all in before the flop and was called by Shin. The flop came 3,7,5 giving both a shot at a straight, but Shin was still in the lead with the ace. The turn was a 3, and the river was a 10, which gave Shin the win holding ace high.

Shin has lived in Leisure World for 10 years and has been a member of the poker club for one year. This was his third final table win. Shin is an active member of Leisure World by serving on the board of his Mutual. Coin collecting and board games are some of the other activities that he enjoys.
