Redeemer Lutheran and St. Theodore

On Sunday, Jan. 19, the congregations of Redeemer Lutheran Church and St. Theodore of Canterbury Episcopal Church will celebrate the second Sunday after Epiphany. The Rev. Murray D. Finck, Bishop Emeritus, will preside over the 10:30 a.m. Communion and worship service at 13564 St. Andrews Drive.

After the service, residents are invited to join members in the Fellowship Hall for coffee, tea, cookies and snacks.

The congregations will continue to collect food donations of canned and boxed foods for the hungry.

The Bible study will continue on Jan. 22 from noon-1:15 p.m. to finish the study of the Ten Commandments and watch portions the movie “The Ten Commandments” under the guidance of Bishop Murray Finck. The group will also decide on what the next study will be.

The Gospel lesson for this week is from John 2:1-11, the story of the wedding at Cana.

Mary tells Jesus about the problem of the wedding running out of wine to serve the guests and his “sassy” response is “Woman, why do you involve me?”

She just turns to the servants and tells them,“Do whatever he tells you” and walks away. Mary remembers that 12-year-old boy and is giving him some of his own back.

Jesus turns water into wine. This is his first miracle. This is his revelation of himself in wine at a common wedding. This is where, although in his mind it was not his time, he fully demonstrated his perfect obedience to his mother, as a human son. He continues in his perfect obedience to his Father, as his divine son even to death.
