LW Men’s Golf League

It was a cool foggy morning that greeted nine men and one woman of the Leisure World Men’s Golf League at the David L. Baker Golf Course in Fountain Valley on Jan. 3.

With above average playing conditions, nine of the 10 golfers shot net at or under par and there were some very low scores. In addition, there were eight birdies, three by Clay Fischer, two by Jim Goltra and Chris Lankford, plus one by Sam Choi. Gary Stivers, Fujio Norihiro and Choi tied for fewest putts in the A flight and Ron Jackson and Bob Munn tied for fewest in the B. Closest to the pin on the 100-yard par-3 third hole was Fischer, and Lankford was closest on the 140-yard par-3 12th hole.

All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap). A flight winners: Fischer, 15 under 47, first place; Stivers, 10 under 52, second; Norihiro, 8 under 54, third; Lankford, 4 under 58, fourth; Jim Goltra, 2 under 60, fifth; Choi, 1 under 61, sixth.

B flight winners: Munn, 9 under 53, first place; Duke Park, 4 under 58, second; Keiko Sekino, 3 under 59, third; Jackson, fourth.

On Jan. 3, eight men competed at the Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana. Even though Willowick is a very straight course with no water hazards and wide fairways, it challenges the average league golfer due to its length. That being said, only two of the golfers were at or under par for the round. In addition, there were just two birdies, one each by Jim Goltra and Fujio Norihiro. Goltra had fewest putts in the A flight, and Duke Park had fewest in the B. Closest to the pin on the 140-yard par-3 fourth hole was Seon Kim, and Norihiro was closest on the 140-yard par-3 12th hole.

All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap). A flight winners: Goltra, 7 under 64, first place; Stivers, even par 71, second; Clay Fischer, third; Sam Choi, fourth; Norihiro, fifth.

B flight winners: Kim, first place; Park, second; Bob Munn, 3 under 59, third.

The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. Advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
