Jan. 8 marked the first Leisure Men’s Golf Club tournament of the year at the Turtle Lake Golf Course. The weather was very windy until 11 a.m. The nearby fires did not help air quality and ash was everywhere. Fifty-three golfers competed in three flights and contended for best net (gross score minus handicap) scores, plus four circle holes (shots within a 5-foot circle rewarded) and two closest to the pin challenges. Bill Lyons had a hole-in-one—not his first—on the 54-yard par-3 11th hole.

The wind was blowing quite strong, and accuracy and distance control were a major issue early in the round. Accordingly, only 24 of the 53 men were net at or under par, with just 41 birdies and only seven circle hole winners.

Closest to the pin on the eighth hole was Bill Zurn at 7 feet, 1 inch, and on the 17th hole it was Jack Haskins at 8 feet, 10 inches. The average net score for all 53 players was 55.6 strokes or nearly two strokes over par. The average gross score was 65.3 – 11 plus strokes over par.

All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap).

A flight winners (handicaps of 0-5): Bob Turner and Bill Lyons, 3 under 51, first place; Thomas Kim and Jae Choi, 1 under 53, second; Alan Sewell and John Kolthoff, even par 54, third; Seon Kim and Bob Barnum, 1 over 55, fourth.

B flight winners (handicaps of 6-11): Trai Nguyen, 6 under 48, first place; Hyon Shin, 3 under 51, second; Jae H. Lee and Dennis McMonigle, 2 under 52, third; JR Rudosky and Luke Sunwoo, 1 under 53, fourth; Kevin Lindstedt and June Um, even par 54, fifth; Steve Kang and Wong Song, 1 over 55, sixth.

C flight winners (handicaps of 12-18): Ron Jackson, 8 under 46, first place; Scott Tuchfarber and Darry Holten, 4 under 50, second; Dennis Jensen and Art Salazar, 3 under 51, third; Paul Shellenberger and Mike Carlson, 2 under 52, fourth; Jon Russell, 1 under 53, fifth; Rick Reed, even par 54, sixth; Ben Benjamins and James Choi, 1 over 55, seventh.

The Men’s Tournament is played every second and fourth Wednesday of each month. The Guys and Gals Tournament is played on the third and fifth Wednesday of each month. Those who had planned to play and cannot should contact Scott Tuchfarber at 909-684-0426 or Alan Sewell at 541-324-8558 as soon as possible. Arrive 15 minutes prior to scheduled tee time and be ready to play.
