During last Thursday’s class, Hui O Hula dancers had a visit from LW resident, Christine (unfortunately, no last name was obtained). Having seen a recent article in the LW Weekly about James Bachetti’s donation of a Tongan grass skirt, Christine was prompted to get out some fabric that she obtained during one of her visits to Tonga. She donated the fabric to Susan Saraf, curator of the grass skirt. Christine, quite a traveler, shared stories of her husband’s time of service in Vietnam and of her own adventure of celebrating the millennium in the South Pacific. The dancers thanked her with a hula.

The club wishes a happy birthday to newcomer Hap Pedigo, who has been a Mutual 11 resident since September 2021. Hap was thrilled to join the LW Hawaiian dance club because he has taken traditional hula with his daughter and several of her classmates’ fathers in Santa Clara for approximately 12 years.

Hui O Hula meets twice a week for hula. Tuesday classes are held upstairs at Clubhouse 6 in the mirror room. Basic steps are taught there from 12:30. Class continues from 1-2 p.m. for those who enjoy island music, and a mild workout with hula dancing by following. Thursday class meets at Veterans Plaza. Reviews and lessons are given from 1 p.m. All are welcome regardless of skill level.

Hui O Hula is looking forward to the upcoming holiday season. Any person or group thats want to book a festive show should call Kay Huff at 562-431-2242.
