Men’s Golf League Results
Friday Golf at Meadowlark Golf Course
Ten golfers from the Leisure World Men’s Golf League played Oct. 21 at the tough 5,600-yard, par 70 Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach, which is located just a few miles from the Pacific. While challenging for scratch golfers, the course features multiple tees on each hole, enabling golfers of all ages and abilities an opportunity to enjoy their round. There is a large golf practice facility plus three putting/chipping greens. Their snack bar is always open.
There are numerous water hazards on this course, with narrow tree-lined fairways and well-guarded greens. The fairways and greens were extremely wet for the entire round making club selection and putting a significant challenge.
With the below average playing conditions the course allowed only four of the 10 golfers to shoot net below par, and only surrendered three birdies.
Winners: A Flight (handicaps 0-19): First place: Dave LaCascia, a well-played 1 under 69; second: Gary Stivers, a nice even par 70, plus a birdie and fewest putts; third: Sam Choi, a hard-earned 2 over 72, plus a birdie; fourth: Clay Fischer, with a birdie; fifth: tie between Fujio Norihiro (with closest to the pin on the 140-yard par 3 seventh hole) and Bill McKusky.
B Flight (handicaps 20 and over): First place: tie between Liz Meripol and Bob Munn, an excellent 2 under 68; second: Gene Vesely, a nice 2 over 72, plus fewest putts; third: Digna Vesely.
Monday Golf at the David L. Baker Executive Golf Course
Thirteen golfers and two guests from the Leisure World Men’s Golf League played Oct. 24 at the tricky 4,000-yard, par 62 David L. Baker Executive Golf Course in Fountain Valley. Baker is the shortest course the league plays with no par 5’s and short par 3’s and 4’s. It has a large practice facility and two putting chipping greens. The snack bar is open.
Although not long in comparison to other Orange County courses, Baker features six ponds, large rolling greens, diabolically deep bunkers and an abundance of ball-grabbing trees. All this makes the game challenging, but still enjoyable for players of all handicaps.
Tee boxes and fairways are still getting much needed attention with many fairways still tagged as “under repair” while undergoing maintenance. Even with the tough conditions eleven players managed to play net at or under par including a couple of birdies.
Winners: A Flight (handicaps 0 -19): First place: tie between Fujio Norihiro and Dave LaCascia, a terrific 6 under 56; second: Clay Fischer, a well-played 2 under 60, plus a birdie; third: tie between Sam Choi (with fewest putts) and Bill McKusky, a hard-earned 1 under 61; fourth: tie between Gary Stivers and Larry Hillhouse, at even par 62; fifth: tie between Glenn Barry and Chris Lankford.
B Flight (handicaps 20 and over): First place: Lowell Goltra, an excellent 11 under 51, plus a birdie and fewest putts; second: Digna Vesely, a super 9 under 53, plus closest to the pin on the 100-yard par 3 third hole; third: Gene Vesely, a very good 5 under 57, plus closest to the pin on the 110-yard par 3 fifteenth hole; fourth: Tom Ross, a sweet 4 under 58; fifth: William Hillhouse, a good 3 under 59.
The Monday and Friday greens Golf Leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. The courses the group plays are always quite full, so advance League reservations are required with a Sign-Up sheet available at each round.
There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-One and Eagles (2 under par), although infrequent, are generously rewarded. If interested, contact, Gary Stivers, 714-313-3697, or Dave LaCascia, 801-674-5975.
