Janice Laine 1937- 2023 Janice Laine, a friend to many in Leisure World, passed away on Sept. 6, 2023. Born in Iowa and raised in Nebraska, she then moved to California. She got her master’s degree and taught at Westminster High School. Janice, her husband and three children lived in Westminster. After her husband died, she moved into Leisure World. Janice was in many clubs, including the Video Producers Club, where she filmed many of the club’s performances. She also co-taught an improv class, was an avid reader and a member of a book club, and wrote the newsletter for the Seniors for Peace Club. Janice is survived by her son Rustan Laine; daughter-in-law Joan; daughter Tina Laine; son-in-law, Van; her grandchildren, Chelsee Laine (married to Trevor McClung) Jake Laine and Victoria Laine; her great -grandchildren Lenin McClung and Mordecai Laine. Richard “Dick” Stone 2023 It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Richard “Dick” Stone. He passed away peacefully at the age of 87, surrounded by his loved ones. He was survived by his daughter, grandson, granddaughter and four great-grandchildren. Dick was a longtime resident of Leisure World. He had served as president of Mutual 1 and also as a board member of the Golden Rain Foundation. He was a Marine, pilot, sailor, engineer and friend. He was also a longtime beloved member of the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. He was also the founder and president of the Special Forces Home For Christmas Fund. Dick received the Spirt of Hope Award from the Marine Corp in 2017, epitomizing the values of Bob Hope. Dick was also recognized with the Armed Forces Service Medal for all his hard work with the Special Forces Home for Christmas Fund. Since 2003, Stone has helped send over 1,000 Marines home for Christmas. He will be deeply missed but will live on through his foundation. SEMPER-FI

Herman Fogata 1924-2023 Herman Fogata, a dedic ated and compassionate individual, peacefully passed away in Seal Beach, California, on Aug. 26, 2023, at the age of 98. Born on Sept. 29, 1924, in Socorro, Texas, Herman had a remarkable life filled with achievements and contributions to his community. Herman pursued higher education at Berkeley and proudly served his country as a Signalman, Second Class in the U.S. Navy. He embarked on a career dedicated to professional service and civil leadership. For over two decades, he served as the executive director of the East Los Angeles Regional Center. Herman also worked in government, spearheading community action projects and advocating for the rights of the disadvantaged and disabled as well as a professor of social work at University of Southern California. Herman’s thirst for knowledge was insatiable, and was recognized as an avid reader and continuous learner. He was often found engrossed in research, studying, and sharing his wisdom. Music, literature and working on his computer outdoors were among his favorite pastimes. In his later years, Herman relocated to Leisure World, residing with his daughter Deborah and son-in-law Kelly. There, he embraced an active lifestyle, visiting the gym daily, attending concerts, engaging in discussions with neighbors, and working on his autobiography. Herman’s enthusiasm for life and his vibrant presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Herman Fogata’s passing is mourned by his family, friends, and the community he served with unwavering dedication. Samuel Joseph McCarthy Jr 1941-2023 Samuel Joseph McCarthy Jr. passed away Aug. 21, 2023, in Seal Beach, California. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Mary, and is survived by his wife, Meinrada, and his children Sheila (Frank) and Kevin (Sara). Sam was the cherished grandfather of Andrew, Stephanie and Allison, who will miss him dearly. He is also survived by his sister, Kathie Simkiss. Born in Philadelphia on June 22, 1941, he attended Cardinal Dougherty High School then LaSalle College. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary, and began a 35-year career with the Internal Revenue Service. In 1972 he was transferred to California, where they made their home in Long Beach. He spent many years coaching youth soccer and served as commissioner of both AYSO Region 114 and the Long Beach Youth Soccer Organization. He was an active member of St. Cornelius Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, led the RCIA team and was head usher for many years. After Mary passed, he met and married Meirada (Bot) and they spent many happy years together. He enjoyed Notre Dame football and maintained a passion for all things Philadelphia, from cheese steaks, scrapple and pork rolls to the Eagles, Phillies and Flyers. A man who loved nothing more than taking a long walk in the rain, it was only fitting that it was raining the morning he passed. A memorial mass will be held Friday, Sept. 15, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church in Leisure World, Seal Beach, California. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Holy Family Church in Seal Beach or The American Cancer Society.

Constance Wessels 1925-2023 Constance Wessels died peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at the age of 97. She was born on Dec. 7, 1925, in Jakarta, Indonesia. She was married to Willy J. Wessels for 53 years. They had four children while they lived in Indonesia. They then fled to Holland after World War II in 1954, where the last three children were born. They came to the United States in 1959 and became American citizens. Constance moved to Leisure World in 2001 after the death of her husband. She lived there happily for 22 years and made a lot of friends. She attended the Holy Family Catholic Church. She had seven kids, 27 grandchildren, and 23 greatgrandchildren. She is survived by her children Barbara Robinson, Rick and Helen Wessels, Annette and Joe Domaracki, son-in-law Bruce Humes, Philip and Debbie Wessels, Marja Stoll, and Dave and Laura Wessels. She had one daughter, Margaret Humes, and daughter-in-law Judy Wessels who preceded her in death. Constance was a wonderful mom and had a great sense of humor. She was a loving, gracious woman and will be greatly missed. In Memoriam Antonio “Tony” Dodero 1938-2023 Golden Rain Foundation (GRF) Director Antonio “Tony” Dodero, representing Mutual 9, died Aug. 13, 2023. He served on the Mutual 9 Board of Directors for 17 years and then as a Golden Rain Foundation director for six years, up until the time of his death. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Dec. 16, at Holy Family Catholic Church in LW. That will be followed by a Celebration of Life at Clubhouse 4. The service was set in December to accommodate his large family, which includes 14 grandchildren, some of whom are away at college. A tribute to his life of work and service will run on page 1 of the Aug. 31 edition of the LW Weekly.
