Six ways to get up-to-date information in an emergency

There are many ways for residents to get up-to-date information on emergencies, disasters and other safety hazards. See below for a partial list of local notification systems to help everyone stay informed during emergencies.
1. AlertOC: a computerized telephone automated community notification system, will provide residents with pre-recorded emergency or incident-specific messages. Messages about potential safety hazards or concerns will be sent to landline phones, cell phones, e-mail addresses and more. If you don’t confirm receipt of the message, the system will try to reach your second contact number or email. The system will continue trying to contact you until it receives a confirmation from you. Residents must register the voice and text communication devices where they want to receive messages. All members of a household should register communication devices and email addresses. People can sign up at http://www.alertoc. org/. Residents and businesses with landline telephone numbers have already been included in the system.
2. Nixle: The City of Seal Beach uses Nixle as another avenue for important notifications. These messages can be delivered to cell phones as text messages, emails or via Nixle accounts. For more information, visit https://local.nixle.com/city/ ca/seal-beach/.
To receive alerts from the Seal Beach local agency, send a text containing a residential zip code to 888777.
3. The Emergency Alert System (EAS): EAS allows broadcast media to quickly disseminate emergency information, similar to test messages on radio and TV stations. The system enables the federal, state and local governments to communicate with the general public.
4. Mobile Emergency Vehicles( police cars, helicopters): They use sirens, loudspeakers, and public address systems to give directions or information to the public.
5. SBTV Cable Channel 3:
The public station can provide information and emergency direction. The city can interrupt regular programming to direct viewers to tune to local cable channels for more information.
6. LW Live Emails: The Golden Rain Foundation shares relevant, site-specific emergency information through Leisure World Live email notifications on the “LW Alert” and “LW Essentials” email lists. Sign up online at www.lwsb.com/lw-live.
Residents should defer to the City of Seal Beach and Orange County for the most up-to-date emergency information.
