HUI O HULA

Hui O Hula, LW’s Hawaiian dance club, offers free weekly hula lessons. Newcomers are welcome to stop by to watch or to begin dancing right away.

Classes are held twice a week, on Tuesdays upstairs in Clubhouse 6 and Thursdays at the Optum Health Care Center conference room, next to Medcare Medical Pharmacy. Both classes start at 1 p.m.

Hui O Hula is now expanding its originally planned serenade to O’ahu into an island-style afternoon of hula and tropical rock on Saturday, April 18, at Clubhouse 4. Beginning at 2 p.m. and continuing into the early evening, the event will feature Hui O Hula dancers performing hula numbers inspired by the island of O’ahu. After the dance presentation, the audience will be encouraged to join in and learn or follow the dancers in a few crowd-pleasing favorites such as “Tiny Bubbles,” “The Hukilau Song” and “My Little Grass Shack.”

Then, musical group Barefoot Wahine will perform tropical rock, joined by steel drummer Chris Wright.

There will also be a 50/50 drawing for the audience. Half the pot goes to the lucky winners who will go home in rhythm and happier; and the other half goes to the musicians.

In class, musicians will be coming to practice with the dancers. It is always a special treat to have live music while dancing the hula. The club gives a big mahalo to them for making the time.
