Copper Enameling Class: Jan. 14 Copper Enameling Class: Jan. 14

The Lapidary & Jewelry Club will hold a class in copper enameling starting on Wednesday, Jan. 14, from 1-3 p.m. The class meets every Wednesday for six weeks in the Lapidary & Jewelry Studio.

Enameling is the process of adding finely ground colored glass to pieces of copper which are then fired in a kiln to make colorful and lasting pieces of wearable or displayable art. Students will learn the proper preparation of the metal and will use various application techniques including layering, stenciling, sgraffito and wet packing.

Students will learn how to use tools and to safely use the kiln to fire the pieces to make them permanent. Students from past classes have surprised themselves at the attractive and wearable pieces they end up with. The class is taught by LaVerne Christenson, who has more than 20 years’ experience in the process.

The cost is $25, which includes supplies like copper, enamels and tools. Sign up in the Lapidary Room, located in Clubhouse 4. Classes are limited to four people.
