Nearly two dozen residents and members of the Impaired Vision and Hearing Club gathered on Oct. 23 in Clubhouse 3 for a Medicare presentation by Beatriz Nunez of the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP). The room was decorated for Halloween, and the club provided refreshments and treats.

Nunez talked about Medicare open enrollment that will last through Dec. 7, with changes taking effect Jan. 1, 2026. She said that HICAP offers free counseling on Medicare coverage, updates and fraud prevention, and helps with signing up for benefits.

In 2026, Medicare will introduce changes to Part D (prescription drug coverage) and Part C (Medicare Advantage). There will be 12 Part D plans available, with Anthem Blue Cross Part D leaving California, and Wellcare and Health Springs joining. Premiums will vary between $110-$220, with a $2,100 out-of-pocket maximum for prescription drugs.

Nunez advised reviewing coverage carefully, comparing networks and avoiding pressure from unauthorized agents. “If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is,” said Nunez.

She also reminded everyone that Medicare never calls or visits homes and that people should protect their personal information and their Medicare number as they would their bank card.

The presentation ended with a Q& A and distribution of Medicare open enrollment materials. The nearest HICAP office is located at the Westminster Senior Center. For assistance or more information, call HICAP hotline at 1-800-434-0222 or 714-560-0424.
