Tips for staying healthy this fall

As seasons change, cooler nights and dryness may bring health challenges for older adults, including respiratory, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal issues. The following tips can help people stay healthy throughout the season.

• Stay hydrated and wash hands frequently.

• Maintainabalancedlifestylethroughnutritiousdiet,adequate sleep and low-impact activities such as walking, cycling or water aerobics.

• Manage stress through exercise and meditation and monitor blood pressure and blood sugar regularly.

• Maintain steady mealtimes.

• Create a comfortable environment by keeping the indoor temperature between 68—73°F and the humidity level around 40-60%; ventilate the area for short periods daily.

• Avoidcrowdedplacesandwearmasksinpublicindoorspaces.

• Get vaccinated to prevent colds, flu and pneumonia.

• Monitor existing illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes or heart disease closely.

• Use non-slip footwear, clear walkways of clutter, and avoid sudden movements when standing up.

• Limit screen time and schedule annual hearing tests for early signs of hearing loss.
