Weight Maintenance Tips for Older Adults

As people get older, it can be harder to keep the extra pounds off. The following tips can help people maintain a healthy weight and overall health.

• Spread out smaller meals. Eat five to six small meals per day to help with digestion and circumvent slower metabolism.

• Choose variety. Eat more vegetables, whole grains, fish, beans, lean poultry and meat, and low-fat or fat-free dairy.

• Watch empty calories that come from sugars, sugary beverages and processed foods with little or no nutritional value

• Eat more protein.

• Consume extra fiber. Fiber can help prevent constipation, colorectal cancer and hemorrhoids, and reduce the risk of heart disease.

• Exercise daily. Bike riding, swimming, pickleball, yoga, and other activities can be beneficial in managing healthy weight.
