Hula dancers perform at Filipino Association’s annual July 4 picnic
HUI O HULA
Hui O Hula welcomes everyone—all skill levels, all ages, all bodies—to join its Hawaiian dance classes every Tuesday and Thursday at 1 p.m. Tuesday’s dancers meet upstairs in the mirror room at Clubhouse 6, and Thursday’s class dances outdoors, under cover, at Veterans Plaza, between Clubhouse 3 and the LW Library.
Classes include both standing and seated (noho) hula, so everyone can enjoy gentle movement, mental focus and melodic island music. Hula isn’t just dancing, it is storytelling, connection and a graceful way to keep the body moving and the mind young. Come barefoot, as hula tradition goes, or wear soft socks or booties.
Hui O Hula enjoys spreading aloha with their hula dancing. The most recent performance was for the Filipino Association’s annual Fourth of July picnic. Dancing “What a Wonderful World” together, with both clubs and all guests, has been a yearly tradition. With outstretched arms and swaying bodies, all had fun creating rainbows, showing the blue skies, shaking each other’s hands and expressing the loving message of “I love you.”
The club gives a huge mahalo to Filipino Association of Leisure World President Anna Wayman for the kind invitation and her amazing organizational talent. Hui O Hula also thanks President Emeritus Ren Villanueva who began the tradition of the veterans annual picnic.
