Thirty-four singers took to the mic on July 31 as audience members enjoyed the summer evening, enjoying ice cream and toe-tapping to melodies sung by fellow members. Frank Farmer did a fine “Lucille.” Frank Miller had the audience moving with “Twist & Shout.” Ren Villaneauva changed the tempo doing “Lady in Red.” Richard Yokomi was at ease singing “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight.”

Astronomy Lectures

Astronomy Lectures


People interested in learning more about space, celestial bodies and how the universe works are invited to join free lectures taught by LW resident and retired physics/ astronomy teacher Jim Johns on Fridays at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Johns gives PowerPoint presentations on astronomy and cosmology. New topics are introduced weekly and there is a question and answer session after each presentation.

CD Music for Seniors

CD Music for Seniors


The CD Music for Seniors Club will host a barbecue on Aug. 22 at 1 p.m. in the picnic area of Clubhouse 1. The cost is $3 for a hot dog lunch that includes chips, a cookie and a bottle of water. People are invited to join club members in the shade to enjoy summer weather, music and friendship. Tickets are limited so RSVPs are mandatory. LW Coin Club


The Coin Club will meet Aug. 14 in Clubhouse 3, Room 2, at 1:30 p.m. Members can participate in door prizes, refreshments, coin auctions, coin raffles, and group discussions regarding currency and coins. Refreshments are provided. Leisure World residents can have coins evaluated at no cost.

LW Cribbage Club


The Cribbage Club meets every Tuesday at noon in Clubhouse 1. Refreshments are served from noon-12:15 and anyone arriving by 12:15 is assured a place to play. A total of seven games are played each week beginning at 12:30. One dollar is collected from each player who plays, and those finishing in the top four scores are awarded prize money the following week. Carrie Kistner provided and served

Scrabble Club


The Leisure World Scrabble Club met on all five Wednesdays in July. The results of the first two weeks of the month were reported in the July 18 LW Weekly. During the last three weeks, there were 33 scores above 300, including seven higher than 400. There were 27 bingos—i.e. the use of all seven tiles in one move. SHUFFLEBOARD CLUB The next all-member Shuffleboard Club general meeting will be today, Aug. 8, at 10 a.m. in Clubhouse 1. All members are urged to attend as the major discussion will be about strategies for fall league play. Even without any additional teams, there are opportunities for additional team captains.
