Friends of the Library donates $5K to support the LW Library


Friend’s of the Library Club President Joyce Brannon presented LW Library Manager Taylor Greene with a $5,000 check to benefit the library at the GRF Board meeting on Oct. 25. The Friends of the Library Bookstore is located across the patio from the library and has books, puzzles, cards and other bric-a-brac on sale at reasonable prices. Forty karaoke enthusiasts entertained the audience last Wednesday, many wearing eyecatching Halloween costumes. “Spooky” set the theme of the night sung by Tony Tupas. David Noble found another themed song, “Witchy Woman.” Vinny Correnti, looking like a mean pirate, did “Mack the Knife.” Kenny Notorleva chose “Witchcraft.” Ellen Brannigan kept it going with “Old Black Magic.”

This week’s puzzle is checkmate in three moves. White moves first and any answer by black the white’s third move is checkmate. Solution to this week’s puzzle is first move Qf7. Art League will host oil painting demonstration on Tuesday


An Art League demonstration will be held Tuesday, Nov. 8, in Clubhouse 4 at 7 p.m. Famous oil painter Tom Balderas will be the club’s guest demonstrator. Growing up in Torrance, California, Balderas lives only a few miles from the ocean, which has made nature, along with his family, the main inspiration of his paintings. Balderas attended Loyola Marymount University where he studied film production

The dancers are practicing “Mele Kalikimaka,” which uses the “Pu’ili” sticks, made of bamboo. These implements are struck in percussive ways during some dances. Hula classes are held twice weekly, and all are welcome to come.
