Nathan J. Nemnich 1930-2023 Nathan J. Nemnich, 92, died Jan. 9, 2023, at Los Alamitos Medical Center. He and his wife, Patricia, of Mutual 7 enjoyed the Seal Beach area and especially living in Leisure World. He was a World War II veteran, serving in underwater demolition. In 2007, Nathan wrote the following poem to his family: “If I had only one more day, I would tell my wife I loved her very much and always have. I sincerely have appreciated the good and accepted the bad days. “That is what I would say if I had one more day. “If I had only one more day, I would tell all my children I loved each one—when they were born and still love them all. “That is what I would say if I had one more day. “If I had only one more day, I would look back on my life, think about my friendships and friends, old and new. I would think back on my successes and failures—both as a husband, father, friend and tell them all—I did the best to be an example helping others. “That is what I would say if I had one more day. “If I had only one more day, I would say, I have had a good life with all the ups and downs. I loved the arts, learning to be better by reading, searching for life’s truisms and history of the worlds to know with each sunrise life begins anew. “That is what I would say if I had one more day. “If I had only one more day, I would remember all my days in the wilderness of nature’s wonders, my times hunting, fishing, enjoying the wildlife of our land and trying to teach my children, all of them, to not only enjoy these things but to respect them and preserve them the best they can. “That is what I would say if I had one more day. “If I had only one more day, I would thank God and Jesus Christ for allowing me to be on this earth to enjoy the sunrises and sunsets, to remember my World War II comrades who are gone now and remember what they sacrificed, their lives, for freedom!!! “That is what I would say if I had one more day. “If I had only one more day, I would remember on that last day with each and every sunrise that the loved ones I leave behind, their lives begin anew, as all mankind awake on another glorious day. That peace in this world is the only way every single day. That is what I would say as I leave on that one more day. May God bless and keep you all, that is my prayer for you. “That is what I would say if I had one more day.” Nathan is survived by his wife, Patricia, of 37 years; children Rink Nemnich (Linda); Terrell Nimnich (Lory); Nathan Nemnich (Suzi Roca); Sherry Perales and Kelly Neubecker (John); grandchildren Tess Nemnich, Hannah Nemnich, Andrew Nemnich, Katelyn Nemnich and Regina Ortiz (Frank); great-grandchildren Lexi Herrera, Nathan Polanco and Kaleb Ortiz. His love of family ran deep and returning to California provided a special time for sharing. He leaves behind a legacy of love and giving. His heart will go on. —paid obituary

Margaret Scammell 1922-2023 Margaret Scammell, an ex- long- time Leisure World resident in Mutual 5, passed away Wednesday night on Jan. 18. She was 100 years old and had been residing in Sunrise Senior Living home in Seal Beach since February 2012. She passed peacefully, comfortably, and without pain. Margaret was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on June 26, 1922. She met and married William Scammell, and they were married for 46 years. He brought her to California to be with family. They bought a home in Lakewood. It was the early 1960’s when they moved into Leisure World. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill, four sisters and two brothers. Her favorite childhood memories were sharing a room with her sister, Bea, and family gatherings putting together puzzles or games. She and Bea were extremely close and in later years she visited her in Canada where she fixed up an apartment in Bea’s home. Marg worked as a receptionist for 25 years at Farmer Brothers. They treated her like family. She retired in 1979 to take care of Bill as his caregiver. They enjoyed many visits to Disneyland and often took family member’s kids. Marg was not only a sweet lady, but a classy one as well. She always dressed well including her springalater high heels and accessories matching each outfit. Her make up and dress were always to the tens. She was a very crafty, gifted person. She loved to sew, knit, make dolls and do needlepoint. She would open her place to LW residents to see her crafts. She also walked all the time and worked out to tapes keeping herself in great physical shape. Her independence meant more to her than anything. Even as dementia and then Alzheimer’s were taking over, she wanted to do “it” herself. Margaret was a very strong, special lady. We are so grateful to have had her in our lives.

Jan Lee Truesdell 1953-2022 Jan Lee Truesdell died of cardiopulmon ary arrest on Oct. 16, 2022, at home. A memorial will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m. in Clubhouse 3, Room 3. Jan was a beloved mother, sister, grandmother and aunt. She is survived by her daughter, Cory Robertson; son and daughter-in-law, Erin and Taylor Kennelly; granddaughters Emerson and Spencer; sisters Linda Lockyer and Anne Govenettio, and her nieces and nephews. Born on March 2, 1953, Jan was known as a free spirit with a love for nature and community. She was a musician, visual artist, and registered nurse. A lifelong California resident, Jan spent her childhood in Long Beach and adult life in the Bay Area and Santa Cruz. She lived in Humboldt County before moving to Leisure World. The family would like to invite Jan’s friends and neighbors to attend the memorial.

Catherine M. Milliot 1946-2022 Catherine Davidson Milliot, a resident of Leisure World, died on Dec. 3 in Newport Beach with her family by her side. Catherine was born in New York to Robert and Catherine Davidson during the Christmas season of 1946. She was a registered nurse for over 20 years and served in many hospitals in New York, Maryland and California. Catherine was married to William (Bill) Milliot with whom she had two sons, Daryll and Scott. She served in many philanthropic clubs and associations and enjoyed gardening and traveling. But her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Catherine is survived by her two sons, her sister Patricia and granddaughters Haley and Taylor. She was preceded in death by her brother Robert.

IN MEMORIAM Former GRF Director Dwayne Bruce Smith of Mutual 7 died Oct. 21, 2022. He was born Dec. 15, 1933, and would have been 89 years old today. He served on the Golden Rain Foundation Board from 2009-2012 and was president from 2010-11. In Leisure World, he was known for fostering what he called “culture change” by encouraging fellow GRF directors to seek ways to streamline GRF procedures and policies. During his tenure, he wrote several hundred memos to directors and staff in an effort to provide the best service to LW residents. His influence is still felt in LW. He was instrumental in the renaming of North Gate Road, which was once called Beverly Manor Drive. He cut the ribbon on the day it was officially opened. Smith created the ad hoc committee which oversaw LW’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2012. It included a daylong salute to the community, a special 50th souvenir booklet, a parade and a memorable talent show at the Amphitheater that he emceed, among other festivities. Smith was born in Wichita, Kansas, in 1933 and moved with his family to Seal Beach in 1941 when he was 8 years old. James Leo Duncan 1941-2022 James “Jim” Leo Duncan, AKA “Papa,” went home to be with the Lord on Thu r sday, Dec. 1, 2022, surrounded by his family in his home in Seal Beach. Jim was born on Jan. 25, 1941, to James Arthur Duncan and Bessie Lee Bewley Duncan and was the younger brother of Bob and Oleta. He is survived by his wife, Janis Elaine Ledbetter; his six daughters: Kristin, Staci, Jamie, Laura, Julianne, Elizabeth; his five sons-in-law: Matt, Mark, Chris, Vic, Brett; and his 13 grandchildren: Chace, Jayla, Michael, Naomi, Simone, Gabriel, Gianna, Elle, Leo, Lila, Theo, Mavis and Celma. Jim was very proud of his large, loving family. Jim Duncan was the broker of the Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, formerly Prudential, real estate office for the past 15 years. He touched so many people’s lives throughout the years. Not only did his agents all adore him, people would stop in the office just to talk to him. He was a very warm, kind person so people just liked being around him. Jim was known by all to be a moral, honest man with uncompromising values. He had an unparalleled sense of humor, loved the spotlight and was often appointed to be the master of ceremonies at community events. Jim loved the Lord and faithfully attended Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church in Los Alamitos. We have peace knowing he was welcomed into Heaven hearing the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” A celebration of life service will be planned for early January. —Paid Obituary
