How to prepare before a storm

El Niño could bring heavier rains, bigger surf, higher tides and flooding to Seal Beach. The city could experience:
• Periods of heavy rainfall and street flooding.
• Higher-than-normal tides and coastal flooding.
• Large surf, rip currents and beach erosion.
• Strong winds that could damage trees and power lines.
• Road closures and travel disruptions.
• Power outages and utility interruptions.
How to prepare:
• Build or refresh one’s emergency kit.
• Store 3-7 days worth of food, water and medications (including for pets).
• Charge backup batteries and power banks.
• Keep important documents in a waterproof container.
• Create a family communication plan.
• Keep vehicles fueled and ready.
Safety tips to follow during a storm:
• Never drive through flooded roadways.
• Stay away from beaches, jetties and flood-prone areas during high surf events.
• Avoid downed power lines.
• Follow instructions from emergency officials.
• Check on neighbors, especially older adults and those with access and functional needs.
