Join the appreciation picnic Sept. 19

The Leisure World America First Republican Club will hold the second annual member appreciation picnic luncheon on Saturday, Sept. 19. Unlike last year, it will be held inside the air-conditioned Clubhouse 1, beginning at 11:30 a.m. The picnic lunch is free for members, and attendees are asked to bring a dessert to share.
The lunch will be a meal with two tacos, beans and rice with bottled water or soda. Those who plan to attend should call Hope Horning at 714-833-1654 to make a reservation. Attendance is limited to the first 100 members. Spots are going fast, so call now to make a reservation. This allows the club to plan for the number of meals ordered from the Taco Tuesday (Koffel’s) food truck.
The club will not have its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 16, due to the picnic. There will be two or three candidates who will speak at the picnic starting at 1 p.m. All Leisure World residents are welcome to come to hear from the speakers.
This year, the mid-term general election will be held Nov. 3 but with mail-in ballots being mailed on Oct. 5, the club’s doorto- door canvassing efforts started the first week of September. As club volunteers are going door-to-door distributing the club’s voter guide, some residents believe that such activity is not allowed in Leisure World. Club volunteers can explain that such efforts are not considered soliciting. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that door-to-door voter activities are protected political speech under the First Amendment. It is not commercial solicitation and is not subject to bans, permit requirements, or municipal ordinances.
In Leisure World, according to the Davis Sterling Act, no GRF or Mutual policy can restrict these activities. It is also a violation of that Act to remove political literature from a neighbor’s door.
The August meeting’s guest speaker Brian Pedral, from the Regional Political Director of Reform California, fired up club members. About 25 new volunteers addressed 1,500 Reform California envelopes in about five hours to help Reform California complete its goal of hand-addressing 4 million envelopes. Reform California is sending individualized Voter Guides regarding the 14 Propositions and local candidates to 4 million voters.
Reform California seeks to be the conservative counterbalance to Sacramento’s policies that are costing Californians with what it believes to be extreme taxes. Pedral helped the America First Republican Club in its mission to educate, engage and activate members in their duty as citizens, including working to elect likeminded candidates to local, state and federal offices.
