Guys and Gals Tournament

Guys and Gals Tournament Guys and Gals Tournament

It was a very warm and humid morning that greeted 20 teams of golfers for the Guys and Gals Tournament on Aug. 19. The hoped-for cooling breeze never materialized, and the temps climbed throughout the round. By 11:15 the last groups finished under brilliantly sunny skies and 85 degree temperatures. The last hole came as a welcome relief for the last few golfers.

The teams of one woman and one man competed for best net scores, as well as four circle holes and two closest to the pin challenges. The 1,680-yard par 54 Turtle Lake Golf Course is starting to be affected by the hot and dry weather from the past eight weeks. Even so, 16 of the 20 teams shot net below par, with the lowest gross score of a 3 under 51 being carded by Bill Lyons and Yasmin Mereli. Best net score was a 6 under 48 by three teams: Ralph Koizumi and Ann Tran, Terry Thrift and Marilyn Hewitt, and John Russell and Liz Meripol.

Closest to the pin for the men on the seventh hole was Bill Lyons, and on the 16th, it was Dave LaCascia; for the women it was Nancy Smith and Laura Garcia. Additionally, there were five circle holes and 38 birdies. Net score equals gross score minus handicap.

A flight winners (team handicaps 0- 6): Koizumi and Tran, first place; Bruce Bowles and Linda Herman, second; Lyons and Mereli, third; Pat Paternoster and Nancy Smith, fourth.

B flight winners (team handicaps of 7-9): Gene Archambault and Stella Yoon, first place; Steve Walker and Susie Kim, and Rod Osgood and Laura Garcia, second.

C flight winners (team handicaps of 10-18): Thrift and Hewitt, Russell and Meripol, first place; Dave LaCascia and Sue Sloan, second.

The next Guys and Gals Tournament will be on Sept. 16 and every third and fifth Wednesday if there is one. The men’s tournament is played every second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Tee times for both tournaments are posted every week in the starter shack before the tournaments and players are requested to check the list or contact Scott Tuchfarber at 909-684-0426, or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.

The Sept. 29 tournament will be a shotgun scramble with first tee time at 8 a.m. and a $10 entry fee. Players must have a handicap to play. This will be followed by a free potluck luncheon at Clubhouse 2 starting at 1 p.m. Eight to 10 teams of five or six golfers will compete for low gross score. The maximum number of players is limited to 54. Sign-ups for the tournament and what to bring to the potluck will start on Sept. 8 at the Tuesday women’s tournament, and at all Tuesday and Wednesday women’s and men’s tournaments to follow. All women’s and men’s golf club members and their significant others are invited.
