Golf Course History

The article at right was posted in the LW newspaper on Aug. 14, 1964. It provides some interesting history of the Leisure World golf course, which has changed configuration slightly over the years, but par has always been 27 for nine holes.

The men’s club currently has its own “smooth swinging” golfer named Bill Lyons, who equaled this 21-stroke record on March 23, 2021, by shooting 6 under par (21) on the front nine and totaled 44 for 18 holes as documented on the scorecard. Lyons’ score per hole was three pars and six birdies for the 6 under par for nine holes. It has been reported by three golfers that Lyons has shot a 7 under 20, but no scorecard is available. Although there is no existing data for an 18-hole lowest score, Lyons’ 44 may stand as one of the best ever played at the Turtle Lake Golf Course.

RECORD SET

Six birdies for a new Leisure World course record of 21 is the latest golf achievement of smoothswinging Morrie Morrow!

Original record of 22 was established by guest pro Gene Andrews in the exhibition round which officially opened the course. This has been equalled many times and frequently threatened by such stellar golfers as Roy Brian, Henry Brandt and others but stood up stoutly until Morrie triumphed.

Morrow’s score was 233322-222-21 against par 27.
