Classes on metalsmithing and copper enameling begin Sept. 9

LAPIDARY & JEWELRY CLUB

The Lapidary & Jewelry Club is offering two separate classes, both of which will start Sept. 9. Sign-up sheets for both classes are posted in the Lapidary Studio in Clubhouse 4.

Metalsmithing Basics Class ($35)

This class will be held in Clubhouse 4 and meet every Wednesday from 9 a.m.-noon for eight to 10 weeks starting Sept. 9. The classes start with copper and transition to silver. Students will learn techniques for cutting, shaping, fileing and soldering the different metals to make jewelry.

The instructor is LaVerne Christenson who has many years of experience working with metals and has taught many times before at the club. The one-time cost for the class is $35 which includes the use of tools and materials needed except for silver. The classes are limited to four people and will fill up quickly.

Copper Enameling Class ($25)

This class will be held in Clubhouse 4 and meet every Wednesday from 1-3:30 p.m. for six weeks beginning Sept. 9. Enameling is the process of adding finely ground colored glass to pieces of copper which are then fired in a kiln to make colorful and lasting pieces of wearable or displayable art.

The class will cover metal preparation and will use various application techniques including layering, stenciling, sgraffito and wet packing. Students will learn how to use tools and to safely use the kiln to fire the pieces to make them permanent. The class is taught by LaVerne Christenson who has more than 20 years of experience in the process. The class costs is $25 and all supplies including copper, enamels and tools are supplied. Classes are limited to four people and fill up fast.
