LW Arirang Club
The LW Arirang Club meets Sundays from 5-8 p.m. upstairs in Clubhouse 6 to learn and perform traditional Korean percussion and dance.
At the July 18 Multicultural Festival, 20 members performed with eight dancers in a fan dance, which symbolizes a flower blossoming during a healthy growing season. The group's teacher, Young Park, also performed a solo jin do drum dance. The performance finished with a showcase of the seoljanggu, the pinnacle of Korean traditional percussion which combines the dynamic rhythms of Korean music with the elegant lines of traditional dance.
The club began its class to provide Leisure World residents with the opportunity to experience arirang while learning to play and enjoy the janggu and drum instruments.
Playing the janggu helps participants improve muscle coordination, memory and cognitive function. Participants express different emotions through playing soft, slow, fast or strong. Performance includes standing, sitting, marching, upper body extension and arm swinging in unison with leader.
New students are welcome. The club plans to hold a beginner's class and an advanced class. The class is open to everyone. The class is taught primarily in English.
