Hui O Hula: Hawaiian Dance Club Hui O Hula: Hawaiian Dance Club

Hui O Hula, LW’s Hawaiian dance club, offers free hula lessons twice a week to anyone who is interested. Classes are held on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. in the Clubhouse 6 mirror room, and Thursdays at 1 p.m. in the Optum Health Care Center conference room, located next to the pharmacy.

On June 20, the hula dancers performed at Marion Dodd’s 80th birthday celebration. Dodd, a Leisure World resident of nearly 27 years, was surrounded by family and friends. Her granddaughters, Erin and Kimberly, organized the beautiful party with family members pitching in on everything from decorations and music to a photo slideshow and catering. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren attended, alongside friends from all walks of life including some of the children Dodd cared for years ago, who are now grown with families of their own.

Hui O Hula will perform Filipino American Association of Leisure World’s (FALW) Annual Fourth of July Veterans Picnic, where LW veterans will be honored. It has become a long-standing tradition for Hui O Hula to entertain while FALW serves up home-cooked hot dogs and hamburgers.

The club is also preparing for a performance at the upcoming Multicultural Festival being organized by the Golden Age Foundation. The dancers will also enjoy a special musical collaboration with Leisure World’s popular band, Coconut Breeze, on July 31 (see page 9). For more club information, call or text 562-338-1502.
