Hi neighbors!

We have been alerted by the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District (OCMVCD) that one of its mosquito traps located in Leisure World captured a mosquito that tested positive for West Nile virus.

So, what happens now? Here’s what OC Mosquito Vector is doing.

In response, OCMVCD is inspecting and treating known water-containing sites where mosquitoes may breed in our community. They use a highly effective, environmentally responsible insecticide that is safe when used as directed around people and pets.

They also inspect our drainage ditch along Golden Rain Road. Inspectors enter the ditch and treat it for mosquitoes. However, it is not OCMVCD’s job to clean out the ditch. Their job is to monitor mosquito populations, identify mosquitoborne diseases, and control mosquitoes through targeted treatment efforts.

They will also look for additional sources of standing water throughout Leisure World. Additional traps have already been set to help identify whether West Nile virus is present in other locations.

Based on the results from this week’s mosquito trapping efforts, OCMVCD will determine whether additional control measures are necessary.

If they find more mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus, they may conduct a targeted spray application, but only if it is deemed necessary. Any neighborhood spraying would take place during overnight hours to minimize disruption to residents. The products used are EPA-approved and considered safe when used as directed around people and pets.

Here’s what you can do.

Wear insect repellent and, when possible, wear light-colored, loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants while outdoors, especially during the early morning and at dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

Dump and drain any containers holding standing water. Even a small amount of water in a potted plant saucer, bird bath or pet water bowl can be enough for mosquitoes to breed. Keep doors and windows closed unless they are properly screened, and repair any broken or damaged screens.

West Nile virus can cause flu-like symptoms, including fever and fatigue that may last for an extended period.

In some cases, it can be physically debilitating, and in rare instances, it can be fatal. However, only a handful of human infections are reported each year across all of Orange County.

So, if you do your part, OCMVCD will do theirs.
