LEISURE WORLD ORCHESTRA
The Leisure World Orchestra plays its final concert of the 2025-2026 season Saturday, June 6, in Clubhouse 2 at 1 p.m. Classical highlights of the ensemble’s programming include Beethoven’s Piano Concerto #3, Khachaturian’s “Toccata,” and “Finlandia” by Sibelius.
The 75-minute program will present 16 short selections spanning many genres. Conductor Linda DeRungs and the LWO’s musicians have prepared a section of well-known works by American composers, including the folk tune, “Shenandoah.” Concertmistress Judy Quon will perform the solo during “Ashokan Farewell,” familiar as the theme music of Ken Burns’ Civil War documentary. The afternoon event will also include a Sousa march, three Gershwin preludes, and a medley of songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals. In addition, small ensembles from within the orchestra will present “Basin Street Blues” and Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer.”
The group will also showcase several international works, most notably a pairing that contrasts two versions of the Korean folk song, “Arirang.” Pianist Yuri Lotakov and trumpeter Richard Freedman will perform a tango-inspired classical work called “Oblivion.”
Orchestra conductor Linda DeRungs works with con - certmistress Judy Quon during the orchestra's May 26 rehearsal.
