The path to the Board: leading by example
BETTER TOGETHER
by David Norvell
GRF Executive Director, CMCA, AMS, PCAM
The upcoming election represents more than just a date on the calendar; it is a pivotal moment for our community to shape its collective future. While casting a ballot is the fundamental right of every member, the period leading up to the election offers a unique window for potential leaders to demonstrate the qualities that defi ne a successful board of directors.
In any election cycle, the temptation to focus on the perceived shortcomings of others can be high. However, true leadership is rooted in a “build up” philosophy. Candidates who prioritize sharing a clear, constructive vision for the community naturally stand out.
The most effective leaders understand that voters are looking for solutions and stability.
By highlighting specific goals— whether regarding fiscal responsibility, operational transparency, or community engagement—candidates show they are ready to do the work rather than just occupy a seat.
As we evaluate those stepping forward, we should look for specific leadership markers that align with our professional Code of Conduct:
• Integrity and Professionalism: Demonstrating respect for the process and for fellow community members, even when opinions differ.
• Strategic Thinking: Showing an ability to look beyond immediate issues to the long-term health of the Foundation, or your respective Mutuals.
• Collaborative Spirit: An effective Board operates as a team. Candidates who demonstrate they can listen and build consensus are often the most successful in the role.
• Commitment to Excellence: A willingness to put in the time to understand the complexities of the legal and ethical requirements, our governing documents and financial reports. BETTER TOGETHER
