Hui O Hula instructor Jojo Weingart was delighted to share a mini hula lesson and performance with the Sunset Beach Woman’s Club on April 16.

Big mahalo goes to Mutual 15’s Jacklyn Taylor for the kind invitation. She has been a member of the Sunset Beach Woman’s Club for more than 30 years and has lovingly taken charge of preparing lunches there for 25 years. She is one of those energetic ladies who believes in staying active and connected. In addition to her many years with the Woman’s Club, she has enjoyed Bunco, Yahtzee, deep-water aerobics, and, in Canada, the YMCA, a garden club, Bunco, and a walking club along the Welland Canal. She has lived in Leisure World for five years and has had a family connection here since 2005. Recently she has become a member of the FALW. Hui O Hula admires her kind and lively spirit.

For the hula presentation, Jojo shared two different but much-loved traditional selections.

The first was “E Lili’u E,” a graceful and expressive mele/song honoring Queen Lili’uokalani, Hawaii’s last reigning monarch. The second was “Hanalei Moon,” the romantic and familiar hapa-haole favorite that brings the beauty of Kauai to life. Together, the two hula dances gave the Sunset Beach ladies a little taste of both kahiko/ancient and auwana/ modern styles of the Hawaiian hula.

Beginning in May, beginners are especially welcome on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. upstairs in Clubhouse 6. Veteran dancers like Susan Cucci and Yo Kishi will help with the free class.

Hui O Hula hopes younger retirees and new residents will consider taking up this wonderful hobby. Hui O Hula is friendship, community, and a connection that can last for years. The club has been sharing that spirit for 21 years in Leisure World, and it is a tradition well worth carrying on.

All are welcome. For class or performance information, call or text 562-544-7697.
