LW Baptist Church
LW Baptist Church worships on Sundays at 10 a.m. in Clubhouse 3, Room 2. This week, the congregation will look into why Jerusalem figures so significantly in the Christian faith. In the Bible, God says that he links his name with Jerusalem (also called Zion). “Yet I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill. I will declare the decree: The Lord said to me, You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me and I will give you the nations for your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for your possession,” Psalm 2:6-8.
For this reason, three faiths recognize Jerusalem as a holy city: the Jewish faith, the Christian faith, and Islam.
The song “The Holy City” summarizes the Christian understanding of God’s choice of Jerusalem. The third verse reads “And once again the scene was changed/New earth there seem’d to be/I saw the Holy City/Beside the tideless sea/The light of God was on its streets/The gates were open wide/And all who would might enter/And no one was denied/It was the new Jerusalem/ that would not pass away.”
The apostle Peter echoes God’s promise: “Behold I lay in Zion a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will never be put to shame.”
