OBITUARY

Ella Blankenship Walton, 95, a GRF director representing Mutual 2 from 2008-2012, died Feb. 1, 2026, at Rowntree Gardens of Stanton. Born on July 13, 1930, Walton was known for her leadership, compassion, and love of square dancing, fine needlework and cycling.

She led a rich and fulfilling life that touched many: “Ella was a very beloved neighbor, and she will be greatly missed. She was a little light in Mutual 2,” said GRF Director Teri Nugent, who represents the Mutual today.

Walton was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She graduated with a BA in Education from Southwestern University, Georgetown, Texas, in 1950. That same year, she married her soulmate John Wesley Walton.

The family moved to Iowa in 1968, when Walton went back to school to earn a master’s degree in Elementary Guidance from Drake University. After a gratifying career spanning almost four decades, she retired from the Goose Creek School System in Texas in 1987, and the Waltons moved to Mutual 2 in Leisure World. Always passionate about community service, Walton ran for and won a seat on the GRF Board as a Mutual 2 representative. She also volunteered at the Health Care Center, running the blood pressure screening program, and delivered food to homebound neighbors for Meals on Wheels.

She loved music, particularly the works of Handel and Van Cliburn, and loved watching opera performances. She was also known for her beautifully hand

Ellen Blankenship Walton made greeting cards and her love of needlework. Her grandmother taught her tatting (lacemaking using a shuttle), which, along with crocheting, were favorite pastimes.

With a spirit as active as her mind, Walton enjoyed scenic bicycle rides with the Leisure World Bike Group. Among her memorable achievements were riding 100 miles in one day on bike lanes in Orange County and a bike tour to England. In her later years, she could be seen zipping around the Mutual in her golf cart.

“While we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the love, wisdom, and kindness she imparted on those fortunate enough to have known her. She has left a remarkable legacy, and her memory will continue to inspire us,” said a message from her family.

She is survived by her daughter Lois Russell, son M. Keith Walton and grandchildren Dennis Lees, Jesse Walton, and Ayla Volmer. Ella was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Wesley Walton.
