LW Men’s Golf League

A sunny, but cool morning greeted 20 players of the LW Men’s Golf League as they arrived at the 4,000-yard par 62 David L. Baker Executive Golf Course in Fountain Valley. By mid-round there was brilliant sun with temps that rose throughout the round. With just par 3s and 4s, but devilishly placed sand traps and lots of water, Baker challenges all.

The course was very wet recovering from the previous weeks’ rains and night-time watering. Most tee boxes were in poor shape but fortunately greens were in good condition and rolled consistently.

With just minor course challenges—tees that were set way back and some difficult pin positions—it was not anticipated that 15 of the 20 players would shoot net at or under par. There were five birdies—two by Chris Lankford and one each by Jae Choi, Seon Kim and Larry Hillhouse.

Closest to the pin on the 115-yard par 3 third hole was Randy Massaro, and Lankford was closest on the 140-yard 12th hole. Jeff Perkins had fewest putts for the A flight, and Tom Ross had fewest in the B.

A flight winners: Steve Earl, 7 under, first place; Fujio Norihiro, 5 under, second; Lankford, Hillhouse and Kim, 4 under, third; Sam Choi and Jae Choi, 3 under, fourth; Jim Goltra, 2 under, fifth; Gary Stivers and Kyle Van, 1 under, sixth; Dave LaCascia, Clay Fisher and Perkins, even par, seventh.

B flight winners: Massaro, 2 under 60, first place; Tom Ross and Won Park, 1 under, second; Ron Jackson, even par, third; Mike Jimenez, fourth; Bruno Santillo, fifth; Bob Munn, sixth.

The league plays every Monday at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. Advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.

There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (two under par), are generously rewarded. Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
