LW CARES FUND

The LW Cares Fund will show the film “It’s Basic,” a must-see documentary covering poverty, inequality, and the future of work today, Feb. 5, at 1:30 p.m. in Clubhouse 4.

The film provides an eyeopening look at the power of cash to transform lives and communities. “It’s Basic” looks at several pilot programs launched in the U.S. that test the effects of giving everyday people an extra $500 to $1,000 monthly, with no strings attached. Produced by Mayors for a Guaranteed Income Founder Michael Tubbs, the film explores the power of cash, the importance of dignity, and the ongoing work of providing an income floor through the eyes of guaranteed income recipients who have witnessed firsthand the life-altering effects of financial stability. Their real-life challenges of trying to get by on a daily basis are at the heart of the film. It also highlights the pivotal role of local leadership in creating a more just and equitable society.

The Leisure World Cares Fund is applying the “It’s Basic” idea to provide a $200 subsidy to residents on low fixed incomes to help pay their HOA carrying charges.

••• Board Meeting on Feb. 12 The LW Cares Fund Board will meet on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 1:30 p.m. in Building 5, Conference Room B. Everyone is welcome to attend. The board will discuss the following:

• Updates on applications for aid and efforts to promote awareness.

• Reports on client assessment experiences and solicited input for improvement.

• Sharing donor engagement progress and outreach efforts.

• An update on the recent speaker series that showcased Tubbs, the pioneer for guaranteed annual income trials.

The fund also welcomes new ideas on spreading the word about the fund’s mission to help provide housing security to residents. There are still funds for more applicants to apply for the available aid for the current year.

Qualified applicants are awarded up to $200 per month for a period of 12 months, which can be renewed annually after review. Funds will be paid directly to GRF and credited to the client’s obligations. Awardees to date have expressed a sense of relief upon being approved and look forward to a bit more cushion between their fixed incomes and their expanding expenses. All application material is held in strict confidence.

People can receive help filling out the application or have the application forms dropped off and be picked up at their unit.
