LWers sought for Pedestrian and Driving Safety Work Study

GRF OPERATIONS COMMITTEE

Traffic and pedestrian safety are hot topics in Leisure World, with residents routinely expressing concerns about speeding, signage, crosswalk safety and other topics.

In a concerted effort to address those concerns, the GRF Operations Committee has appointed four GRF directors to conduct a Pedestrian and Driving Safety Work Study.

The group is chaired by GRF Corporate Secretary Edward Jablonski of Mutual 11, with members James Farr, Mutual 5; Tim Kearns, Mutual 1; and Jeff Mulqueen, Mutual 1.

Jablonski described this endeavor as a grassroots project, saying, “We are seeking to engage the community to find ways to improve driver and pedestrian safety in Leisure World. To that end, the study group is hoping for spirited community engagement.”

“Residents are key for identifying issues, needs, and proposed solutions,” said Mulqueen. “Input from residents will be the first step in formulating a community-wide proposal to improve pedestrian and driving safety throughout Leisure World.

“Although it is recognized that the expertise of traffic safety engineers may be needed, input from residents will drive the process and outcomes,” he added.

There are two ways for residents to get involved in this process. First, the group is seeking to add two member residents who possess extensive backgrounds in community planning and/ or traffic safety. People who are interested may send their names and experience to James Farr at jfarr@lwsb.com. The deadline to apply is Feb. 13.

Secondly, the group seeks residents who have high interest in a particular pedestrian/ traffic-related safety issue: speed bumps, road signage, speeding, crosswalks, etc. These people will contribute by collecting data and conducting research on their specific areas of interest. This will yield a broad, data-backed foundation upon which to develop proposals to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety in Leisure World. Researchers should send their names and areas of interest to James Farr at jfarr@lwsb.com no later than Feb. 13. This group will not consider traffic flow, traffic efficiencies or golf cart policies and procedures, issues that may be addressed in other GRF committees.
