Alan Sewell aces No. 3 for hole-in-one glory
LW MEN'S GOLF CLUB
On Jan. 14, an all-hands LW Men’s Golf Club meeting was called to order by President Ron Steele. Financially the club is in excellent shape, and to date 49 golfers have paid their dues for 2026.
The slate of officers for the 2026 calendar year was presented and approved with Steele, Bill Zurn and Byron Schweitzer remaining on as president, vice president and treasurer. Walter Kim will become the new membership chairman, as Dave LaCascia is retiring after 10 years of service. Young Lee was appointed to be an at-large member of the club board, with full voting rights. A search for a new club secretary has been implemented as Walt Bier is also retiring after years of service. Those who are interested can contact Ron Steele at 559-9053296.
Preceding the meeting, 58 players were greeted by a bright, warm and windless morning at the 1,680-yard par 54 Turtle Lake Golf Club. The fairways and tee boxes were very damp with some muddy areas, but the greens were in good condition and very consistent.
All the golfers teed off in a shotgun fashion. Each man competed for best net scores (gross score minus handicap), plus four circle holes (shots within a 5-foot radius rewarded), and two closest to the pin challenges.
Slightly longer fairway grass and dampness contributed to higher scores, with 13 of the 58 men scoring net at or under par. There were 58 birdies with 10 circle holes. Closest to the pin on hole No. 8 was Joon Sup Yoon and on No. 17 it was Hyon Shin. Significantly, Alan Sewell scored a hole-in-one on the 100-yard par 3 third hole. Low net score for the round was Bud Young at 7 under 47; Rod Osgood, 5 under 49; and Won G. Park, 4 under 50. Low gross score of the round was Seon Kim and Bill Lyons at even par 54.
A flight winners (handicaps of 0-5): Kevin Childress, first place; Ralph Koizumi, second; Seon Kim, Bill Lyons and Thomas Kim, third; John Kolthoff, Mike Mayfield and Seung Lee, fourth; Jae Choi, fifth.
B flight winners (handicaps of 6-11): Bruce Bowles, first place; Hyon Shin, Trai Nguyen and Won G. Park, second; Fujio Norihiro, Richard Yokomi and Ron Jackson, third; Alan Sewell and Young Lee, fourth.
C flight winners (handicaps of 12-18): Young, first place; Osgood, second; Won H. Park, third; Noe Alcaraz, fourth; Jon Russell, fifth; Steve Kang and Mark Tal, sixth; Paul Shellenberger, John Sorensen and Darry Holten, seventh.
The next men’s tournament is on Jan. 28. Those scheduled or who plan to play in any tournament and cannot should contact Scott Tuchfarber at 909-6840426 or Dave LaCascia at 801674-5975 as soon as possible. Arrive 10-15 minutes prior to scheduled tee time.
