Guys and Gals Golf Tournament
Dense fog and wetness greeted the 55 golfers of the Guys and Gals Tournament on Dec. 17. The fog lifted slightly by mid-round and the sun finally appeared around 10:30, just after the first flight finished.
Twenty-eight teams of one man and one woman teed off at 7:30 a.m. at the 1,680-yard par 54 Turtle Lake Golf Course. Each team competed for best net scores (gross score minus handicap), plus four circle holes (shots within a 5-foot radius rewarded), and two closest to the pin challenges.
Tee shots running up to the greens were stopped short by the dampness and longer fairways grass. All tees, fairways and sand traps were extremely wet, and the greens were quite soft leading to deep gouges from balls that landed off the tee. Special thanks to starter Sophia Kim, as she spent part of her early morning duties fixing old ball marks and seeding tee boxes.
Seventeen of the 28 teams scored net at or below par, with three teams scoring gross below par. There were three circle hole winners—and 25 birdies—both tied for record lows. Average net scores for all teams was 53.1 or nearly one stroke under par— about eight tenths better than the last tournament. Clearly, the cooler and damp conditions contributed to the record low number of birdies and circle holes but didn’t seem to affect the overall scoring, which was marginally better than recent tournaments.
Closest to the pin for the men on the par 3 eighth hole was John Kolthoff and on the 17th it was Alan Sewell; for the women it was Cece Feltman and Laura Garcia. Low net score for the round was Terry Thrift and Marilyn Hewitt, 11 under 43; followed by Bruce Bowles and Linda Herman, 7 under 47; then Dave LaCascia and Sue Sloan, 6 under 48.
A flight winners (handicaps of 0-5): Bowles and Herman, first place; Mike Mayfield and Feltman, Gene Archambault and Stella Yoon, second; Bob Barnum and Kyung Ju, third.
B flight winners (handicaps of 6-8): Thrift and Hewitt, first place; LaCascia and Sloan, second; John Rudosky and Patty Littrell, third; Dennis McMonigle and Janice Turner, fourth; Fujio Norihiro and Keiko Sekino, Hyon Shin and Sang An, fifth.
C flight winners (handicaps of 9-18): Kevin Linstedt and Mary Ann Moore, Rod Osgood and Laura Garcia, first place; Jae H. and Sun Lee, second; Ron Jackson and Dale Quinn, third.
The next Guys and Gals tournament will be on Jan. 21 and every third and fifth Wednesday if there is one. The men’s tournament is played every second and fourth Wednesday of each month.
