American Latino Club

The LW American Latino Club will meet on Thursday, Jan. 8, in Clubhouse 3, Room 2, from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. All Leisure World friends and neighbors are invited to join this gathering as the club celebrates the country of Guatemala. Each month, the club celebrates different Spanish-speaking countries through videos showcasing the different customs, cultures, food and people. The American Latino Club is all-inclusive, welcoming everyone from different backgrounds and traditions. Fluency in Spanish is not a requirement to join.

Annual membership dues are $10 per person. The club welcomes non-members as guests with a limit of three times per year, after which membership is encouraged.

Every month the club orders food in honor of the country the club is highlighting. The choices are as closely matched to that country’s cuisine so members can get the full experience. The meal options for January are from Restaurant Chapin 502, Guatemalan and Mexican food. People can choose between pollo guisado (stewed chicken), chile relleno con picadillo (chiles stuffed with minced meat) or carne adobada (pork).

All meals include rice, black beans, dessert and beverages. Plantains are optional. None of the options mentioned above are spicy. The cost for lunch is $22 for members and $25 for guests. Pricing increases are due to rising costs charged by the restaurant.

People must submit their payment and meal choice to club Treasurer Rachel Fullum by dropping it off in her mailbox at 1371 Oakmont Road,150-L, Seal Beach, CA 90740. Make sure to allow enough time for delivery if sent by U.S. mail. Payment by check should be made payable to the American Latino Club. People should RSVP no later than Monday, Jan. 5 at 3 p.m. Members and guests who bring their own lunch will need to pay $5, which includes beverages. People should notify Fullum even if they are bringing their own lunch by calling 310-869-7730.

The club will also hold a board election. The current club secretary Graciela Asi is stepping down due to work-related responsibilities. This position is opened to club members only, and the board is in search of candidates; computer knowledge required. Those interested should contact Board President Miryam Fernandez at 562-884-7460 prior to the January meeting for consideration. The board warmly acknowledges Graciela’s dedication and many contributions. She will continue her membership with the club.
