Newcomer blows it out of the water at Turkey Shoot

Rita Filohoski, who had been to the courts for the first time to practice three days before the event, was the third place winner with 141 points at the Shuffleboard Club’s annual Turkey Shoot, held the afternoon of Nov. 19.

With 28 participants, Roger Bennett placed second with 145 points, and Lynne Haines won first place with 164 points.

Filohoski said she’d been thinking about coming to the courts since last May and that “I’m only a hop, skip and a jump away from the courts, living in Mutual 17.” She attributed her success to her three helpful coaches at the Monday morning practice, who gave her advice that included keeping her head down and picking a spot on the triangle closest to her position. She told her family the club members “were so very welcoming.”

With light refreshments and constant rotations through six different games, scorers and players alike had a lot of bustling activity. Lane 1 required shooting through a wooden turkey in the middle of the lane; lane 2 required shooting with the hand one normally doesn’t use; lane 3 to ricochet off bumpers to score; lane 4 required landing on the lines instead of inside them; lane 5 had bowling pins to avoid, and lane 6 needed a powerful shot to bounce off the backboard and onto the court to score. It was quite an obstacle course but one filled with both fun, confusion, skill and luck. The club congratulates all the top-rated winners.

Players brought and donated canned goods for Noel Community Organization, a food pantry in Long Beach.

Tuesday, Nov. 11 results: Team Bob beat Team Sue 7-5 and Team Karen bested Team Harold 8-4. All-game winners were Sandy Bush, Anne Calvo, Devon James, Sal LaScala, Bob Peterson, Lori Propert and Ellie West.

Thursday, Nov. 13 results:

Team Karen surpassed Team Micki 8-4 and Team Lynne and Team Jack tied. All-game winners were Micki Aiello, Mindy Burkschab, Kathryn Ewell, Susan Hopewell, John Mount, Carol Schubeck, Ellie West and Bob Zellmer.

Friday, Nov. 14 results:

Team Shel buried Team Carol 10-2 and Team Patti edged by Team Rod 7-5. All game winners were Lee Broadbent, Steve Edrich, Enrique Gracia, Lynne Haines, Rod Leebrick, Marlene Levy, Shel Magnuson, Patti Nemnich and Chandra Patel.
