Regular tournaments are held on the first three Saturdays of every month in the lobby of Clubhouse 6 with registration beginning at 10 a.m., along with treats and coffee. Cards are in the air at 10:30.
The Casino Tournament is coming on Dec. 13. Registration and a continental breakfast will begin at 9:45 a.m. Play will begin at 10:30. Advance registration is $25 for members and $30 for guests. The cost at the door on the day of the event is $30 for all players.
The club had another great turnout for the Nov. 8 game. Each week, big hands bring special prizes. This week, the high hand winners were: Jack Watkins (J-J-J-J-A), Jack Lee Pfeifer (J-J-J-J-9) and Kathy Elliott (10-10-10-10-Q). By playing and winning the promo hand of 2-7, Doug Wolfe won a prize.
With 63 players to start the game, the winners of each table went to the final table. The final table players were: Erica Greenwood, first place; Franca Yeske, second; Guta Basner, third; Ray Lim, fourth; Jack Lee Pfeifer, fifth; Ken Goettsch, sixth; Marvin Rolnick, seventh; Deborah Casper, eighth. Play continued until Greenwood and Yeske were heads up. In the last hand of the match, Yeske had 7-J, and Greenwood was holding 8-10. Yeske went all in before the flop and was called by Greenwood. The flop came 5-6-7, giving Yeske two pair and Greenwood a straight draw. The turn (2) was no help to either player. The river was a 9, giving Greenwood the straight 6-10 and the win.
Greenwood has lived in Leisure World and been a member of the poker club for 31 years. She has made it to the final table six times. Greenwood worked for GRF Security in Leisure World early in her time here. In addition to tournament poker, Greenwood is a member of the doo-wop group, plays Mexican train, dominoes, and her hobbies are bowling and fishing.
The club’s no late seating policy has become even more important recently as seating capacity has now been reached. Late arrivers have a good chance of not being able to play.
