LW Democratic Club

It was exciting to see the success of the “No Kings” demonstrations around the country. In Indivisible’s own words, “Saturday was comfortably the largest single-day peaceful protest in American history. More than 7 million people at more than 2,700 protests across the world—including in the biggest, bluest, city centers and reddest and most rural towns in America.”
The Seniors for Peace and the Democratic Club organized a “No Kings” protest under the LW globe on Oct. 18, with a crowed size estimated at several hundred people. Protesters were there peacefully concerned about the current status of the government and fear for democracy. While solemn in their concerns, the protesters were nonetheless a cheerful group, enjoying hundreds of honks and thumbs up by passing cars. There was even a smattering of MAGA hats seen protesting “No Kings” day.
The LW Democratic Club’s canvassing teams are still working hard getting the message out to vote yes on Prop. 50 for the Nov. 4 election. Canvassers are happy to answer any questions about the proposition and redistricting in California.
Prop. 50 is fair and proportional and is temporary lasting until 2030 with the new census. In this way California is using the power of the voters to approve emergency maps. It’s very easy in Leisure World: ballots can be cast at the following locations:
• At the official drop box located in the Amphitheater parking lot.
• At the LW Post Office.
• At any USPS mailbox located throughout LW.
• Any official voting center. For canvassing information email Jane Brittingham at janebrittingham51@gmail.com
or Kathy Moran at kmoran97@yahoo.com.
For more information on voting or to receive language assistance, go to www.ocvote.gov .
The Democratic Club membership meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday each month in Clubhouse 3, Room 2, at 1:30 p.m. People are invited to come early and bring a lunch. Light snacks are served. The club was fortunate to have Stephanie Wade an advocate for LGBTQ + and transgender rights, for the Oct. 22 meeting. Wade gave an inspiring and powerful presentation and took questions for half an hour. Janet Keo Conklin, running for OC assessor, spoke briefly as well.
Due to the holidays, there are some changes to the membership meeting timetable. The regularly scheduled meeting for Nov. 26, is moved to the following week which is Dec. 3. The December membership meeting is canceled. During the month of October, the Democratic Club’s Hospitality Booth will be open every Tuesday and the third and fourth Thursdays from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. next to Clubhouse 6.
