Hui O Hula Hawaiian Dance Club Hui O Hula Hawaiian Dance Club

Hui O Hula dancers and instructor Jojo Weingart welcome LW residents to experience the joy and health benefits of dancing Hawaiian style. Hula lessons have been given in Leisure World twice weekly for over two decades. Dancers of all skill levels are welcome. Dress comfortably; instead of dancing without shoes, participants may wear soft shoes or booties for regular practice.

Both classes start at 1 p.m. On Tuesdays, dancers meet upstairs in Clubhouse 6; and on Thursdays, class takes place outdoors, under the tent at Veterans Plaza. When it’s wet or cold outside, Thursday classes temporarily relocate to inside Clubhouse 3.

The current hula subject is a festive holiday song, choreographed by Weingart, named “Here Comes Santa in a Red Canoe.” Movements include paddling an imaginary canoe and flashing a cheerful wikwiki/ quick smile by snapping fingers with smiling faces.

Dancers are also practicing several traditional and modern Christmas hula favorites such as “Mele Kalikimaka/Merry Christmas”; “Pola’i E/Silent Night”; “White Christmas” and more in preparation for the upcoming holiday season and performances.

Any club or family planning a holiday gathering is encouraged to contact Hui O Hula. Its dancers are always happy to share their aloha spirit in dance and music without charge.

For information on classes or to arrange a performance, call or text 562-338-1592 or talk to any Hui O Hula dancer.
