CDs for Seniors Club
At its October meeting, the CDs for Seniors Club was treated to the story of how, as a young woman, club member Loni Gardette and her mother met composer and performer Martin Denny.
It was on the next-to-the-last night of their Hawaiian holiday that they ventured into Don the Beachcomber’s lounge on Waikiki Beach and band member Denny was greeting the guests.
When Loni mentioned to him that she owned his “Exotica” album, he perked right up and a lively discussion of music ensued. When Loni and her mom returned for their last night of listening to the band’s unique music—which blended tropical themes with jazz, Poynesian influences and Latin rhythms—Denny spotted them and had them seated at the center stage table. Besides being a delightful and entertaining story, it also provided CD members with an introduction to an artist that they may not have previously experienced.
The next CDs for Seniors Club meeting might not introduce members to new artists, but it will still be filled with a great deal of music. The club’s holiday party will be held on Thursday, Dec. 18, in Clubhouse 3, Room 2, at 1 p.m.
