Letters to the Editor
Editor:
I just came from the Fall Festival sign-ups in Clubhouse 2. I would like to thank the GRF Recreation Department for doing this event for its members every year.
Also, a big thank you to the team from Recreation that signed us all up today. The team was efficient and kind, which is hard to be at that early hour!

Assembly Bill 1572 prohibits the use of potable water to irrigate “nonfunctional” turf after January 2029. This will have a dramatic impact upon the nature and appearance of our community.
Areas of “nonfunctional” grass will need to be irrigated only with reclaimed water or replaced altogether.
It would be extremely beneficial for GRF to coordinate with the 16 Mutual boards and to invest in professional landscapers who are knowledgeable about California native plants. The sooner we engage with them the better.
A major reason for GRF to undertake the implementation of AB 1572 with landscapers is to maintain a uniform appearance throughout the community.
The strips of grass in front of our units are indefensible under the new law. It would be good for the GRF and the landscape consultants to have a plan for integrating these with the existing planting zones, offering various California native plants to shareholders depending upon location and sunlight.
There is good news for our wonderful mature trees. Trees are exempt from the ban. Trees are not watered at the base of the trunk; water needs to be applied to the root system, the full extent of the trees canopies at least.
Therefore, areas of grass can potentially be maintained, with islands of grass linking up for recreational use.
Forward planning and spending money on professional landscapers will ensure that our village remains beautiful.

I read an earlier letter suggesting that, perhaps, we could save some money by closing some of the pedestrian entrance/ exit points, instead of repairing all six.
The point was valid, but perhaps the writer was overlooking a fundamental fact.
Our community is sizable. People driving cars may not be impacted too much by the distance from a driving entry to their unit. However, people who must walk are in a different situation.
The distance from a given unit to the nearest entrance/ exit gate becomes much more significant when transport is “shanks mare.”
I would ask those making the final decision in this matter to remember that fact as decisions are made.

For those of you who are just plain tired of trying to conjure up daily meals, I can’t say enough about how much I have appreciated having meals delivered three days a week here in Leisure World.
A little over a year ago, I signed up with Simply Delicious after trying other meal plans that did not work for me. Salim Khoury (the owner) is very accommodating to individual tastes and dietary needs and you can call him if a concern arises and you want to make changes. I wholeheartedly recommend this service.
