Once a year the LW Pool Club has an eight ball tournament for C level players. Held on Sept. 27, this year’s tournament was a doubles elimination single event. Two losses and you’re out.

There were 14 players, so two players received byes in the first round. Rosie Edrich came from behind to beat Wild!fire Christensen in the first round. Dave Mackinder got a bye and beat Susan Dodson, who had won her first two games when her opponents scratched on the eight ball.

In her second game, Edrich beat Cory Navarette, matching her with Dave Mackinder in the winner’s bracket. She beat Mackinder when he scratched on his last ball, leaving her an easy shot on the eight in front of the corner pocket. This left her all alone in the winner’s bracket, a very good place to be.

In the loser’s bracket Christensen lost to Paul Ivanoff, but finished in fourth place. This matched Ivanoff with Mackinder, with the winner meeting Edrich for the title. Mackinder beat Ivanoff in a close match to advance to the finals. Since Mackinder had lost to Edrich earlier, he had to win two straight matches from her since she hadn’t yet lost a game. Mackinder made all of his balls and Edrich still had a ball on the table. However, Mackinder couldn’t get an easy shot on the eight and missed it five straight times. He finally made the eight on the sixth try, but scratched the cue ball in the corner pocket to give Edrich the title.

What made this a remarkable win for Edrich was that it was the very first tournament she ever played. Although I had never seen her play, I’m told she does have a pool table in her apartment.

Dave Mackinder (l-r), second place; Rosie Edrich, first; Paul Ivanoff, third.
